ambivalent encounter (iii)

outside a liquor store
hearts spiked
with desire
to drown ourselves
with the cheapest
and dirtiest of alcohol
we stood
in front of the neon light
and close to the police cars
chasing people
from one place to another
like the guy
who came to us
with a plead for money
to fill his cold stomach,
i made a dollar
manifest out of my wallet
and gave it to him
feeling righteous and powerful,
he spoke
words of gratitude
and went away
carrying a humble silence.
